Title: Roleystone Primary School - Memory Garden
The
students in year 5 had already completed work on establishing native
gardens under existing tall trees. Building up garden beds on top
of the well-worn soil created this garden because the soil is laterite
and difficult to dig. The garden beds were built on layers of wet
newspaper using imported soil mix, planted and then topped with mulch.
There had also been a dry creek bed created to channel overflow from
the school buildings during winter. The result inspired the project
you see here.
The students had one of their classmates lose her battle with leukaemia
and they wanted to build a garden that they could use for quiet times.
As the garden linked the first project with their existing poultry
run at the back of the school it was important to provide a path.
The students were able to source the bricks and over a day they worked
to lay them with minimal help from their teacher.
The garden was then built using gravel boulders, tyres and wood. Parents
and the local landcare group donated plants. The gardens now provide
an area for the students to walk, sit and chat away from the bustle
of the main oval and playgrounds. |

Title: Reminiscing
I was a prefect at Roleystone Primary School in the year 2002.
I was there when we built that path (see photo above) and it was hard
work. I remember all the good times along with the bad but all in
all Roleystone is a good school. I have friends that go there now
and I see them every now and then. |
